 FAQ

Do I need a patent strategy?  If you are in any new technology-related business, the answer is yes. A patent strategy defines what your investment should be in your own intellectual property as well as your plan for dealing with the intellectual property of others.  More info...

I need file for a patent. What should I do first? Carefully document your invention in a bound lab notebook and have it witnessed. Include at least the information required for an invention disclosure.

Can I write my own patent application if I am not a patent attorney or agent? Yes and some inventors have done so. Patent practitioners, having themselves made a large personal investment to develop their skills, usually discourage the do it yourself approach. One must consider the tradeoff between cost, time required to develop adequate skills, and the risk of reduced claim coverage.

What do I need to know about competitors?  I recommend some focused analysis to understand the competitive landscape in detail relative to your own plans. This includes understanding products, patents, technologies, and businesses that could impact your new ventures.  More info...

What is a Patent Harvest Session? The process includes bringing some key inventor(s) and business managers together to review products or designs in development. During this review, inventions are identified that can be patented. More info...

What is targeted innovation? Targeted innovation is similar to "brainstorming" in that new ideas are generated that are beyond current designs. Targeted innovation goes a step further and brings a combination of deep market trend insight, technology trend insight, patent landscape insight, and engineering analysis into play.  More info...
